The Euphemia quilt is my recreation of an antique quilt, made by Euphemia Ballinghall Maxwell. Euphemia was born in Scotland, she married Andrew Maxwell and they had four children. They emigrated to Australia in 1853. After Andrew died in 1865 Euphemia and her children then emigrated to New Zealand where Euphemia had a sister and a brother. When her sister died she inherited the 'Elms' in Tauranga. Euphemia lived at the 'Elms' until she died in 1887.
Euphemia's original quilt resides at the Elms to this day, the Elms is now a heritage building and open to the public.
Being a New Zealander myself, I found this incredibly interesting. I had such fun gathering the information, I found Euphemia's story to be fascinating, I felt a deep connection with her quilt immediately. Pictures of the original quilt can also be found in the book Warm Heritage, which also showcases other quilts made by women who settled in New Zealand in the 1800's.
