YLI Soft Touch Thread

Hello All I have had a fun morning testing this YLI Soft Touch Thread. As you may know from previous posts I am keen to find  a cotton thread for invisible machine applique. I have tested many but have not been impressed with the results, I think I may have finally found one that I like. This thread is 100% long staple egyptian cotton, it is a 60 weight, lovely and fine and just melts into the fabric and "disappears".  I am very fussy about the thread not being visible as its makes soooooo much difference to the finished article. Here is a pic of the test I have done on one of my blocks using it on this vine. [caption id="attachment_302" align="alignleft" width="448"] YLI Soft Touch Thread Test[/caption] There is a great range of 28 colours to choose from, making it easy to find just the right colour needed. With the reproduction fabrics that I have used in my quilt I prefer the cotton thread as it has a dull look that suits these muted shades, and is a more natural product. Other threads have a  sheen such as  polyester and silk which tends to show on the reproduction fabrics. If I was using a different fabric I would be tempted to use silk as this is 100weight and also very good at disappearing into the fabric. In saying all of this YLI invisible is also very good and I find it is sometimes the only thread that will not show. It is invaluble when you have a fabric with many different shades in it, and also you do not have to change the thread when changing from different coloured applique pieces. I have also found that the YLI soft touch thread has many other uses, it is great for precision piecing. I have been making lemoyne stars, which have the dreaded 'Y" seams. It has been great in getting these accurate as the thread does not take up so much space in the seam. Here is a picture of my stars. [caption id="attachment_303" align="alignleft" width="298"] Lemoyne Star using YLI Soft Touch Thread[/caption] I have had a lot of fun piecing my new quilt design. The fabrics and colours a just up my ally. I have loved playing around with piecing techniques and different threads to see what works the best for me and have found some great quick cutting and piecing tricks to make these more difficult blocks easier. The pattern and kits for this quilt will soon be available for you on the website. This thread also has many other uses. I have been missing in action for a few days....... do you get withdrawal symptoms when you don't get to sew?... I do. Seriously I'm addicted!

Today is a good day, I am in my happy place at the sewing machine. My machine is cleaned and oiled, with a new needle and I am ready to go. I plan to get busy finishing the flying geese units for the final border on my Vintage Nine Patch Quilt.

This month (January) the Small Wonders Club quilt pattern is called 'Rose of Thorns'. I am in love with this little quilt it has all my favourite colours in it and of course a little applique too. I think I'm also addicted to Flying Geese blocks, they are so cute in the border. Rose Of Thorns measures 22 inches square.
