Pumpkin Seed Quilting Design

September 10, 2015 7 Comments

Working on the Whimsical Baskets Quilt, I decided to add a Pumpkin Seed Quilting Designto the background of the applique center. I have always loved the pumpkin seed quilting design,  it fits in so many places and always enhances the quilting. Initially I had thought a simple cross hatch design would be enough, but after adding the pumpkin seed design the quilt is taking on a wonderful new look that I am loving. It gives the quilt a lattice look behind the applique, which looks delightful... Pumpkin Seed Quilting Design / Pine Valley Quilts   Pumpkin Seed Quilting Design / Pine Valley Quilts To quilt the Pumpkin seed design I have used Aurifil 50 weight Thread. The Aurifil thread is 100 percent cotton and plays very well with the linen background fabric I have used for the applique centre of the Whimsical Baskets Quilt. Aurifil Mako thread is also a 50 weight 2 ply cotton which makes it a good weight. The Pumpkin Seed Quilting Design has enough lift to be seen, but still letting the applique be the main focus. I am loving how this quilt is really taking shape, trying to take the quilting on this quilt slowly and enjoying the process. With this awful wet weather we are having I will be working on this quilt today and hope to have the centre finished. Happy Stitching Sharon

Your pumpkin seeds are wonderful, add depth. I must remember for one of my quilts.

Love it! Reasonably labour intensive, but so worth it.

Hi Anudge
Thanks you for your kind words. Yes I did mark and stitch a crosshatch grid first in fine thread. This makes it easy to free motion the pumpkin patch design.

The applique and quilting are wonderful! I’m wondering if you marked a grid before you started that pumpkin seed motif. It’s very effective.

I have been missing in action for a few days....... do you get withdrawal symptoms when you don't get to sew?... I do. Seriously I'm addicted!

Today is a good day, I am in my happy place at the sewing machine. My machine is cleaned and oiled, with a new needle and I am ready to go. I plan to get busy finishing the flying geese units for the final border on my Vintage Nine Patch Quilt.

I think I'm also addicted to Flying Geese blocks, they are so cute in the border. Rose Of Thorns measures 22 inches square.
